BSNL, which aims to
enroll some 200,000 students to its branded service, Livetutor,
in three
years, faces flattening revenues as more customers give up
their fixed-line phones.
New Delhi: Leveraging the spread of its broadband network,
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, or BSNL, has entered the online tutoring
business as part of its efforts to increase revenues from value-added
services.
BSNL, which aims to enroll some 200,000 students
to its branded service, Livetutor, in three years, faces flattening
revenues
as more customers give up their fixed-line phones, the mainstay
of its business, in favour of mobile phones.
The state-owned
firm, which has tied up with Hyderabad’s
Smartlinx Voip Networks Pvt. Ltd to sign up customers and teachers,
plans to differentiate its service with personalized online
tuitions via a videophone or Web camera. |

The Smartlinx would provide the video tutor services under the brand name “Live Tutor”, which would give user accounts to those who avail themselves of the service.
Mr. Chrisostom further said equipment was being installed at the BSNL’s city facility on Bandar Road for offering 3G mobile services. It involves offer of high quality voice and high speed transfer of data. As the installation of equipment was nearing completion, the service was expected to be launched here soon.
Mr. Chrisostom said the broadband service was being offered in a special package in rural areas where they would be allowed to open a kiosk and offer internet services at Rs. 5 an hour. He said all efforts were being made to install necessary equipment and increase the reach of broadband in the district.

Live Video Tutoring and BSNL Hungama portal .
BSNL Live Tutoring service (with Smartlinx as franchisee) is aimed at giving a personalized
Tutor service to students within India and outside through Indian tutors located
anywhere in the country. This service will be available at all times, announced
BSNL (planning and new services) director R K Aggarwal.
Depending on the class and type of teachers to be used,
each session will will be
charged from Rs. 50 to Rs. 240.
BSNL Hungama portal will offer subscribers services like audio music, video music
and gaming facilities at monthly charges.

BSNL customers can utilise the BSNL Hungama services free of cost for next one month,

Hyderabad: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s largest
telecom operator, on Friday launched two innovative broadband value added services
‘Live Video Tutoring’ and ‘BSNL Hungama portal’ here.
“BSNL is committed to provide services to broadband users at affordable rates,”
BSNL (planning and new services) director R K Aggarwal after inaugurating the services
said.
BSNL Live Tutoring service (with Smartlinx as franchisee) is aimed at giving a personalised
Tutor service to students within India and outside through Indian tutors located
anywhere in the country and will be available at any time, he said.
The charges for one session will vary from Rs50 to Rs240 per session, depending
on the class and type of teachers to be used, he said.
BSNL Hungama portal — a digital entertainment portal available on bsnl.hungama.com
will be offering audio music, video music and gaming facilities to BSNL broadband
customers at monthly charges. As part of Ugadi festival, BSNL customers can utilise
the BSNL Hungama services free of cost for next one month, BSNL official T N Sudhindra
Kumar said. Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, MD and CEO Neeraj Roy said, “On
demand entertainment storefront will shortly include films and television programmes.”

HYDERABAD: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Friday launched ‘Live Tutor’
and ‘Hungama’ services, the latter on a free of cost basis for one month for BSNL
broadband customers all over the country. The occasion marked the commercial launch
of Live Tutor but the BSNL aimed to do so for Hungama shortly.
The ‘Hungama’ is a digital entertainment portal which will offer audio and video
music besides gaming facilities to customers. Rentals With a monthly rental of Rs.149,
the subscribers would have unlimited access to over 50,000 audio songs, 1,000 video
music and 600 games that are available in BSNL library. The ‘Live Tutoring’ is a
personalised tutor service to students within the country and abroad through Indian
tutors located anywhere in the country. The services will be available at any time
anywhere basis.
The charges per session varied from Rs. 50 to 240 depending on the class and type
of teachers availed. Launching the twin services, BSNL Director (Planning and New
Services) Rakesh Kumar Agarwal said the telecom service provider would soon shift
to new generation soft switches for voice, video, messaging, data, multi-media and
location based services.
The BSNL was evaluating the six bids that were received and it would place order
for procurement of material in one-and-a-half months. About one million lines were
proposed in 2009-10. Mr. Agarwal also said the BSNL would launch 3G mobile and wireless
services in the southern cities in two or three months. The services were presently
confined to 12 cities elsewhere in the country. The equipment for expansion of 3G
services would arrive in a couple of weeks. He added that the BSNL had a share of
56 per cent in five million broadband connections all over the country. Anil Jain,
General Manager (Broadband), BSNL, said the BSNL would launch video surveillance
in business premises with cameras for customers running security risks. It would
also experiment broadband on cable television.
T.N. Sudhindra Kumar, Chief General Manager of BSNL, Andhra Pradesh, said there
were 2.6 lakh broadband customers of BSNL in the State.
